Background of the Study
Jos, the capital of Plateau State, is renowned for its temperate climate, stunning landscapes, and cultural diversity, making it a key tourism destination in Nigeria. The region attracts visitors to its iconic sites, including the Jos Wildlife Park, the National Museum, and the Shere Hills. However, the area is not immune to natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and occasional violent weather conditions, which have disrupted tourism activities over the years.
Natural disasters not only cause physical destruction but also affect tourists' perceptions of safety, leading to a decline in visitor numbers. According to Usman and Bello (2024), flooding incidents in 2022 caused significant disruptions in Jos, with tourist arrivals declining by approximately 25% during the affected periods. These disasters impact not only the tourism sector but also the local economy, as the region relies heavily on revenue generated from tourism activities.
Given the growing importance of tourism as a driver of economic development, understanding how natural disasters influence tourist arrivals in Jos is critical. The study aims to explore the relationship between natural disasters and tourism, offering insights into how stakeholders can mitigate the effects of these disasters and ensure sustainable tourism development in Plateau State.
Statement of the Problem
Natural disasters pose a significant threat to tourism in Jos, as they disrupt travel plans, damage infrastructure, and create negative perceptions about the region's safety. Despite the recurrence of these disasters, there is limited research on how they specifically affect tourist arrivals in Plateau State. This knowledge gap leaves stakeholders, including government agencies and tourism operators, ill-equipped to implement effective disaster management strategies.
Moreover, the lack of proactive measures to address these challenges exacerbates the problem, leading to prolonged recovery periods and significant economic losses. With the increasing frequency of natural disasters due to climate change, it is imperative to examine their impact on Jos's tourism sector and identify strategies for minimizing disruptions.
